India vs Sri Lanka, World Cup 2023: As it Happened

The Indian team was put into bat by Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis, and despite losing Rohit Sharma early, it was a Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill show. The pair added 189 runs for the 2nd wicket, with Gill scoring 92 runs and Kohli amassing 88 runs.

After the duo departed, Shreyas Iyer took over the reign and played a scintillating knock of 82 runs off just 56 balls as India posted a mammoth 357 for 8 in their 50 overs. Sri Lanka pacer Dilshan Madushanka picked up a five-fer, thus becoming only the 4th Lankan bowler to achieve the milestone.

But it was a dismal batting performance from the Sri Lanka unit, who crumbled like house of cards in front of an excellent Indian bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah picked up a wicket on the very first ball of the run chase, and Mohammed Siraj then continued with another stellar spell by picking three wickets. Sri Lanka were reduced to 3 for 4, and were in tatters.

And then it was Mohammed Shami show, who picked up his second five-for in the World Cup 2023. Shami rattled the middle and the tail of the Lankan lineup, as Kusal Mendis and his team got bundled out for just 55 runs.

With the defeat, the Sri Lankans are now almost eliminated from the World Cup, while India become the first team to qualify for the semifinals.

Mohammed Shami (MOTM): "I want to thank Allah - all the hard work we are putting in, the rhythm we have found, it's because of that that you are getting to see this storm (on the cricket field), the incredible things our bowling unit is doing. The rhythm we are bowling with, I can't believe anyone will not enjoy it. So, yes, we are enjoying ourselves a lot and working together as a unit, and you are able to see the results of that.

(India's highest wicket-taker in WC) Yeah, I am trying (to do my best), as always, trying to pitch the ball in the right area and rhythm, because in big tournaments, if you lose the rhythm it's very difficult to get it back. So right from the start, the attempt has been to focus on the right areas and right lengths, and it's working, so why not try to repeat it?"

India vs Sri Lanka: What Captains Said

Kusal Mendis (SL Captain): "It was a disappointing defeat. They bowled really well with seam and swing, and unfortunately, we couldn't play to our potential. [Feel bowling first was a mistake?] Uhhh, I can't say like that. The wicket looked a little slow that's why I wanted to bowl first. I think Madushanka bowled really well, but Shubhman's chance and Virat's chance weren't taken and then the game changed a bit. But everyone bowled well in the middle overs. (can SL turn it around) We have two matches with Bangladesh and New Zealand, and we will come back stronger."

Rohit Sharma (IND Captain): "I'm very happy knowing we have qualified for the semifinals, this was the first goal. But how we approached the seven games has been quite clinical, and a lot of individuals have put in the efforts, put their hands up and stood up. It was a good challenge for us to bat and put runs on the board.

Shreyas is a very strong lad, strong in his mind, and today he did what he is known for - take on the opposition and the bowlers. He's been working very hard on his game and today we saw what he's capable of. As for Siraj, he's a quality bowler and if he does that it's quite a big difference for us.

(On KL Rahul and DRS) I have left it to the bowler and the keeper to make those calls, but yeah I have to find individuals I can trust to make those calls, some may go here and there, today was 50-50 but that happens some times. (On South Africa) They're playing some good cricket, so are we, so it's going to be a good game."
