The official announcement was made by the franchise at an event in New Delhi and the move didn't come as a surprise to anyone for it was on the expected lines.

Gambhir returns as DD skipper:

Gambhir, who left the franchise back in 2011, has returned as the captain of the franchise. The 36-year-old cricketer has led his previous franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two title triumphs.

The left-handed batsman wasn't retained by the franchise for this season and was bought by Delhi for Rs 2.8 crore in the IPL Auction in Bengaluru, this year.

Delhi Daredevils CEO, Hemant Dua, made the news official at an event.

"Happy to announce @GautamGambhir as our @DelhiDaredevils Captain for 2018 and beyond ... He left us as a #Captain and come back as our #Captain ... #VivoIPL #IPL #DilDilli," Dua tweeted.

Gambhir, the local lad, too took his Twitter handle and expressed his happiness after being named the captain of the franchise.

While answering the questions put up by the media persons Gambhir said,"I'm more excited than I have ever been.

When asked about his role as the leader and his influence on the squad, he said, "The captain is as good as his team!"

It will be interesting to see how Gambhir leads this young side in the upcoming season. Delhi are the only side who own the dubious distinction of never making it to the final stage of the league in its history of 10 years.

The southpaw has played 131 matches in the IPL so far and aggregated 3634 runs at a strike rate of 124.15. Gambhir has slammed 31 fifties in the home-grown league, with 93 being his highest score.

For 2018, Daredevils retained Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Chris Morris and appointed Australian great Ricky Ponting as their batting coach.

In the auction, they also retained the likes of Mohammed Shami and Kagiso Rabada by using the Right to Match (RTM) cards. However, they stunned all by purchasing Glenn Maxwell for a huge sum of Rs 9 crore ($14,13,900).
