IPL Records That May Be Broken In IPL 2023

IPL 2023 is all set to start on March 31 with a high-voltage clash of champions as holder Gujarat Titans take on four-time winners Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The near two-month cricket extravaganza will see superstars from across the globe take to field when the 10-team tournament returns to it's traditional home and away format after three seasons of closed door events.

Players likely to break records in IPL 2023

A total of 74 matches will see at least 80 overseas stars alongside the big names and relatively unknown uncapped stars of Indian cricket battle for their respective franchises in season 16 of Indian Premier League.

Over the years, we have seen some players make a name for themselves and some create records that may take a very long time to be broken in the cash-rich league.

But with few veterans retiring, some records and milestones may be beaten this year in IPL. While Chris Gayle's record of most sixes is unlikely to be broken soon, a few like most wickets can be surpassed in 2023.

Also a few records like most appearances, most runs, most fours, most fifties, most hundreds, most dot balls, most hattricks, most ducks and most catches among others can be extended by the current holders this season.

IPL Records That May Be Broken in IPL 2023

1. Most Wickets in IPL: Dwayne Bravo (183 wickets), the current holder of the record for highest wicket-taker in IPL, has announced his retirement to take over the bowling coach's role at Chennai Super Kings.

So, there is a big chance, the West Indian's record of most wickets in IPL could be surpassed during IPL 2023 with at least four active players having the opportunity to get close or go past the tally.

Yuzvendra Chahal (166 wickets), Amit Mishra (166 wickets), Piyush Chawla (157 wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin (157 wickets) are the likely candidates to take the top spot for most wickets in IPL during the 2023 season.

2. Most Caps in IPL: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, currently the most capped player in IPL with 234 caps, has the chance to become the first player to reach 250 appearances in the IPL if CSK go deep in the tournament.

3. Most Runs in IPL: Virat Kohli (6624 runs) is the leader for most runs in IPL followed by Shikhar Dhawan (6244 runs). At least one of the two will break the 7000-run barrier this season.

Meanwhile, most others will also cross milestones like David Warner (5881 runs) and Rohit Sharma (5879 runs) can cross the 6000-run mark, and MS Dhoni (4978 runs) can breach the 5000-run mark.

Also, the likes of KL Rahul (3889 runs), Manish Pandey (3648 runs), Sanju Samson (3526 runs) and Faf Du Plessis (3403 runs) can all reach 4000 runs during IPL this year.

Jos Buttler (2831 runs), Quinton de Kock (2764 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (2644 runs) can surpass 3000 runs in IPL. Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill also are not far away from 2000 runs.

4. Most Sixes in IPL: Chris Gayle sits on top for most sixes in IPL with 357 maximums. While that record is impossible to break, the slot for second held by AB de Villiers (251 sixes) can be beaten.

Rohit Sharma, who currently has 240 maximums in IPL, can take second spot. If the Mumbai Indians skipper manages to surpass that feat, he will become the first Indian player to hit 250 sixes in the IPL.

5. Most Fifties in IPL: David Warner's record (54 fifties) for most fifties is unlikely to be broken, but Shikhar Dhawan (47 fifties) and Virat Kohli (44 fifties) have a chance to catch up on 50 fifties in IPL.

6. Most Hundreds in IPL: Gayle owns the record for most hundreds in IPL with 6 hundreds in the IPL, but can be overtaken by Jos Buttler (5), Virat Kohli (5), KL Rahul (4) and David Warner (4).

7. Most Ducks in IPL: Mandeep Singh (14) and Rohit Sharma (14) currently share the unwanted record for most ducks in IPL history. The duo can extend that record in this year's IPL or the chasing pack could catch up.

8. Most Fours in IPL: Shikhar Dhawan (701 fours) is run-away leader for most fours in IPL history followed by Virat Kohli (578 fours) and David Warner (561 fours), who close in on 600 fours in IPL.

9. Most Dot Balls in IPL: Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1406 dots) has the chance to add to his record for most dot balls and become the first player to bowl 1500 dot balls in IPL.

Bhuvneshwar is also 4 maidens short of breaking the most maidens record in IPL currently held by Praveen Kumar (14 overs). Bowling maidens in the shortest format is a huge task.

10. Most Hattricks in IPL: With his return, Amit Mishra has a chance of adding to his 3 hattricks in IPL history. However, this feat is a very difficult one to achieve.

11. Most Five-Wicket Hauls in IPL: James Faulkner holds the record for most five-wicket hauls in IPL, but there is a chance one of the many bowlers can go level or overtake the former Australian pacer during the season.

The most four-wicket hauls could be a much easier record to breach. Sunil Narine tops the charts with seven 4-wicket hauls followed by Kagiso Rabada, who has six four-wicket hauls.

12. Most Catches in IPL: With Suresh Raina (109 catches) and Kieron Pollard (103 catches) retiring, the likes of Rohit Sharma (97 catches) and Virat Kohli (93 catches) have a chance of catching up for most catches in IPL.
