As the IPL 2024 is approaching, the teams are looking to fine-tune their squads for the long season of competitive cricket. Players' injuries are part and parcel of the game and teams have started facing them even before the start of the competition.
Several teams will be missing the services of key players either in the initial stage of the competition or the entire season. One of the biggest absentees from this year's IPL will be star India pacer Mohammed Shami, who plays for Gujarat Titans.

The Gujarat Titans (GT) have signed Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for their star pacer Mohammed Shami. Shami, who underwent successful surgery for a right heel issue, is currently recovering and will miss the upcoming IPL season. Warrier, a right-arm fast bowler, brings valuable experience with 5 IPL appearances under his belt. He joins the Titans for his base price of INR 50 Lac. While he may not boast Shami's pedigree, Warrier will be looking to make a positive impact for GT.
Shami's absence is a significant blow for the Titans. He was instrumental in their success last season, claiming the Purple Cap with a whopping 28 wickets and playing a key role in their run to the IPL 2023 final.
Shami's performance in the previous edition and his knack for picking up wickets and containing the flow of runs in crunch situations made him an asset for the 2022 IPL champions. Replacing his experience and fiery pace will be a challenge for GT.
The Mumbai Indians (MI) have added Kwena Maphaka, a promising left-arm South African pacer, to their squad as a replacement for Sri Lanka pacer Dilshan Madushanka. Madushanka - whom the five-time champions bought for INR 4.60 crore - was ruled out of the entire tournament due to injury.
Maphaka recently impressed on the international stage, being named Player of the Tournament at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup. He joins MI for his base price of INR 50 Lakh.
He will be teaming up with star India pacer Mumbai Indians in the dressing room during the IPL. Interestingly during the U19 World Cup 2024, Maphaka claimed he wishes to be better than Bumrah. Little did the uncapped pacer know, back then, that he'd eventually get a call-up from MI for the biggest T20 league in the world.
Maphaka's inclusion signifies MI's commitment to nurturing young talent. While he might not be a seasoned campaigner yet, his recent form and potential offer an exciting addition to the Mumbai Indians' bowling attack.
Both GT and MI will be hoping their replacements can step up and contribute to their respective team's success in the upcoming season.
