IPL 2024: Why MS Dhoni Picked Ruturaj Gaikwad As His Successor at CSK? Tom Moody & Shivam Dube Explain

In a startling move just a day before the commencement of IPL 2024, the legendary MS Dhoni, five-time IPL-winning captain, announced young Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad as his successor at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), sending shockwaves across the cricketing world.

Tom Moody, the former coach of SunRisers Hyderabad, offered intriguing insights into Dhoni's decision, hinting at possible considerations regarding the former India cricketer's physical readiness for the gruelling tournament.

"One thing that did cross my mind when I heard the news the first time is that does this mean the preparation until now hasn't gone as planned for Dhoni, physically," Moody speculated.

"Remember, at the end of the day, he is 40 and has played an enormous amount of cricket, and that does take a toll on your body when you are a keeper. Probably he was questioned on whether he can get through the whole tournament, and this sort of gives him the flexibility without compromising the side. This could possibly be the case."

The transition of leadership was not devoid of emotions, as described by CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, who recounted scenes from the dressing room when Dhoni revealed his decision.

"There were a lot of emotions. A whole lot of tears. There wasn't a dry eye in the dressing room. Everyone was moved," Fleming shared. "There was also a round of congratulations to Ruturaj. He isn't the most vocal person, but he has qualities to lead us in the right direction."

Defending champions CSK commenced their IPL 2024 campaign with a victorious start, defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22.

"I found out two days ago, and I was shocked," admitted Dube regarding Dhoni's decision. "I think he's handed it to the perfect person. Ruturaj is quite like Dhoni, very cool and calm."

Speaking about playing under Gaikwad's captaincy, Dube expressed enthusiasm. "It's really fun because I have played under him before. I know what kind of a captain he is, how he behaves, and what he expects from me," Dube remarked, highlighting Gaikwad's ability to lead with composure and clarity, reminiscent of Dhoni's style.
