Mohammed Shami amongst 26 athletes to recieve Arjuna Award 2023

Star India pacer Mohammed Shami will be conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award for his imperious performance in the year 2023.

The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer (33), who plays for Bengal in the domestic circuit, has had a stellar show in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 held in India.

The Amroha pacer was the top wicket-taker in the global showpiece as he picked up 24 wickets in seven games. Shami - who spearheaded the Indian pace attack in the ODI World Cup at home - is amongst 26 athletes in the country to receive the award.

Team India entered the final riding upon Shami's sensational performance in the semi-finals against New Zealand, where the speedster returned with a seven-wicket haul. Overall in 2023, Shami picked up a whopping 43 wickets in 19 innings.

Arjuna Award is India's second-highest sporting honour and is awarded to a sportsperson for outstanding performance in Sports and Games. The President of India will give away the awards on January 9, 2024.

India's ace doubles shuttlers Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty will be awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2023 for their immense contribution to Indian badminton.
