Player Biography

Katene Dalton Clarke is a dynamic right-handed opening batter from New Zealand, known for his aggressive strokeplay and ability to provide explosive starts in the Powerplay. Clarke comes from a prestigious sporting lineage, with several family members having represented New Zealand in rugby and netball. Clarke first emerged on the national radar as a key member of the New Zealand squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and has since become a vital fixture for Northern Districts in domestic cricket.

The 2025-26 season was a definitive breakthrough period for Clarke, marked by his elevation to the international stage. His domestic form in the 2025-26 Super Smash was nothing short of sensational, as he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 431 runs. This prolific run included a spectacular unbeaten century, 100 not out off 54 deliveries against Otago and a blistering 97 against Canterbury, directly powering the Northern Districts to the domestic T20 title. In addition to his T20 exploits, he has remained a regular for Northern Districts in the Ford Trophy and Plunket Shield, maintaining his reputation as one of the most dangerous top-order hitters in the country.

Clarke's stellar domestic summer earned him his maiden call-up to the Black Caps in March 2026. He made his T20 International debut on March 22, 2026, against South Africa at Wellington's Basin Reserve, followed by a second appearance in Christchurch. Most recently, in April 2026, he was selected for the New Zealand white-ball tour of Bangladesh, where he is expected to serve as a primary power-hitter in the T20I setup.

On the franchise front, while he remains an asset for the Northern Brave, he has previously expanded his experience globally by playing for the Los Angeles Lashings in minor league cricket in the United States. Clarke’s career achievements are highlighted by his rapid ascent in the T20 format, where he now boasts two centuries and a career strike rate exceeding 140. With over 1,400 runs in domestic T20s and a growing presence in the national side, he is increasingly viewed as a long-term successor in the Black Caps' top order heading into the next cycle of ICC global events.
