Player Biography

Few in the history of ODI cricket have taken to the format as seamlessly as Matthew Breetzke, who has made a strong impact since breaking into the South African setup. His cricketing journey began at Grey High School before he made his professional debut for Eastern Province in 2017.

With a solid technique and the ability to score consistently, he soon caught the attention of selectors. Early exposure came through the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, followed by stints with the South Africa Emerging Squad and in domestic T20 leagues. Breetzke made his T20I debut against Australia in 2023, but it was in franchise cricket where he truly announced himself. Representing Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20, he amassed 416 runs in the 2024 season, putting himself firmly on the radar.

Matthew carried that momentum into ODI cricket the following year, enjoying a remarkable start to his career. He became the first player to register a score of 50 or more in each of his first five ODI innings. His rapid rise saw him take on greater responsibility within the side. By September 2025, less than a year into his ODI career, he was entrusted with leading the South African ODI team in the absence of Temba Bavuma. Even after being moved down the order, he continued to deliver consistent performances through the year.

In franchise cricket, his form ensured he remained a sought-after player. He was retained by Lucknow Super Giants for the 2026 IPL season. In the SA20, after three seasons with Durban’s Super Giants, he moved to Sunrisers Eastern Cape for the 2025-26 season and contributed 291 runs in their title-winning campaign.
