Punjab Kings chased down a huge 206 runs and defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets in their first match of IPL 2022 at DY Patil Stadium.
Chasing a mammoth 206, Punjab Kings batters put up a combined effort as they snatched a sure shot win from RCB's grip.
Punjab Kings were off to a solid start in a big run chase as the new opening pair of captain Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan added 71 runs between them. But Wanindu Hasaranga, playing his first IPL game, picked up a wicket on the very first delivery he bowled and dismissed Mayank for 32.
Dhawan and Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa kept scoring at a decent pace but both the batters were dismissed in quick succession leaving their team in some trouble.
Dhawan was removed by Harshal Patel for 43 when Anuj Rawat took a fine catch. While Siraj dismissed Rajapaksa (43) and trapped India U19 star Raj Bawa in front for a golden duck to turn the tide for his team.
Liam Livingstone's cameo was ended by young pacer Akash Deep as Rawat took another fine catch, this time in the deep.Livingstone scored 19. Wickets kept falling but every Punjab batter ensured the asking rate was still under control.
In the end, Odean Smith showcased his big-hitting prowess as he hammered 25 off 8 balls to finish with a flourish for Punjab. Smith - who was dropped by Rawat in the deep for 1 - made RCB pay for it and smashed 25 runs from Siraj's final over and brought the equation to 10 off 12 balls. Shahrukh then finished the game for his team as their batting effort made the run chase look ridiculously easy.
Earlier in the day, captain Faf du Plessis and debutant Anuj Rawat put up a solid fifty-run opening partnership for Royal Challengers.
Captain Faf made an immediate impact with the bat for RCB as he notched up his maiden half-century for the franchise in his first game. Despite having a slow start, the previous edition's leading run-scorer shifted gear in no time and brought up his fifty off 41 deliveries. The right-handed batsman hit Odean Smith for a maximum to bring up his half-century.
After getting to his fifty, the Protea star unleashed himself and hit Harpreet Brar for two consecutive maximums. Virat Kohli too joined the party as he stepped down the ground and hit the left-arm spinner for a biggie over long-off. After Oden Smith leaked 23 runs, the next over bowled by Brar yielded RCB 21 runs.
Before he was dismissed for 88 off 57 balls Du Plessis scored 118 runs from just 61 balls with Kohli. The duo hit three fours and 9 sixes in their partnership as the RCB captain displayed absolute carnage at the DY Patil Stadium. Shahrukh - who had dropped a sitter to give Du Plessis a breather on 7 - took a splendid catch to end a fine knock off Arshdeep Singh's bowling.
But Dinesh Karthik's pyrotechnics gave RCB the impetus RCB needed as they ended up posting 205/2 in 20 overs. Karthik smashed 32* off 14 deliveries while Kohli scored unbeaten 41 off 29 balls.
So the first doubleheader of the tournament didn't disappoint.

Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore will lock horns in the second match of today's double header in IPL 2022 at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
Both teams in search of their first ever IPL title will be led by new captains as Mayank Agarwal replaces KL Rahul as the skipper of PBKS, while former RCB skipper Virat Kohli passes on the leadership baton to Faf du Plessis.
PBKS retained only Mayank and Arshdeep Singh from last season and had the best ever auction adding top players like Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow among others.
RCB, on the other hand, retained Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj and bought back the likes of Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga for big money in addition to Du Plessis and Josh Hazlewood.
PBKS and RCB will hope this is the year to finally clinch the title that has evaded them for 14 seasons.
Mayank's side had the best auction, but they will be without several key players for their season opener like Bairstow and Rabada.
RCB too will be without the Aussie duo of Hazlewood and Maxwell for their campaign opener.
However, both sides still have the depth to assemble challenging playing 11s.
In head to head battle, PBKS has won 15 of their 28 meetings against RCB, who have won 13 times.
At the Dr DY Patil Stadium, RCB has won 1 and lost 1, while PBKS has lost their only match.
As it is a new season, both teams will start with a clean slate under new leaders. So, let's wait and see what the IPL title hopefuls have in store for tonight.
