The right-handed middle-order batsman, Karthik, who remains the only active player from the squad that debuted in India's maiden T20 international game in 2006, demonstrated that he still possesses ample cricketing ability and could serve as a finisher for Team India in the upcoming marquee tournament scheduled to take place in the USA and the Caribbean in June-July.
Faf du Plessis, the captain of RCB, showcased his prowess with a quickfire 62 off just 28 balls, adorned with 7 boundaries and 4 sixes, while Karthik, known for his improvisation, played an explosive innings of 83 runs from 35 deliveries, including 5 fours and 7 sixes.
Despite their impressive performances, they were overshadowed on the night. Karthik, the veteran wicket-keeper-batsman at 38, continued to enhance his reputation as a T20 finisher with his blistering knock, showcasing his ability to make batting appear effortless even on a ground where bowlers were enduring a nightmare.
Karthik's strike rate of 237.14 was second only to the centurion of the evening, Travis Head, who scored at a remarkable rate of 248.78. Despite losing partners at the other end, Karthik managed to accumulate 59 runs off 29 balls for the sixth wicket with Mahipal Lomror. Karthik further added 63 runs for the seventh wicket with Anuj Rawat as RCB maintained a brisk pace.
Although his efforts provided some excitement to the enthusiastic RCB crowd, it was not enough to alter the outcome of the game. Nonetheless, Karthik received praise for his valiant effort, entertaining the passionate RCB supporters until the very end. Even in the face of defeat, the stadium reverberated with chants of 'Karthik-Karthik' and 'DK-DK', acknowledging his contribution to the match.
The senior cricketer - who has donned many hats by now - was hailed on X, formerly known as Twitter, for his incredible batting effort in the ongoing competition. Many even requested the BCCI to include Karthik in the T20 WC squad.
