Mumbai, Jul 18: Suryakumar Yadav, the dynamic and hard-hitting batter, has been appointed as India's new T20I captain, surpassing Hardik Pandya, the previously presumed heir apparent of Rohit Sharma.
Hardik, the vice-captain of India's T20 World Cup-winning side, was a front-runner for the role, given his past exploits as a captain in the absence of Rohit. Suryakumar Yadav emerged as a dark horse and tipped the scales in his favour. Also Read: India Squad for Sri Lanka: SKY Named T20I Captain Over Hardik Pandya

This move also signals the board's vision for the future, with Suryakumar expected to lead the team in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The decision by the BCCI has ignited discussions in cricketing circles and on social media, with many attributing it to the influence of Surya's former mentor, Gautam Gambhir, who recently became the coach of the Indian cricket team.
Gambhir's move to the coaching role for the Indian team naturally led to speculations about Suryakumar's ascension in the team hierarchy. Yet, it's essential to acknowledge that his appointment as captain is a recognition of his consistent performance and leadership abilities.
It's important to understand that the 33-year-old star India cricketer's rise to the captaincy is rooted in merit, not favouritism. He is a natural leader and has worked his way up with perseverance, hard work and his penchant for excellence.
Gambhir, a stalwart in Indian cricket, has a long history with Surya as their association dates back to their time at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gambhir, as the captain of KKR, played a pivotal role in shaping the Mumbaikar's career. During his early IPL years with Mumbai Indians, Surya struggled to find a place in the playing XI.
It isn't hidden from the world how his move to KKR proved to be transformative. Under Gambhir's leadership, a young Surya thrived, becoming known for his aggressive batting style and match-winning performances. Gambhir's belief in Suryakumar's potential was evident, and their partnership flourished.
In an interview with myKhel, Ashok Aswalkar, Suryakumar's childhood coach, highlighted his leadership qualities, calling him a natural leader who leads by example. "Surya is a natural leader. He might be Gambhir's favourite, but he will get the leadership role on his own," Aswalkar added.
"Due to early setbacks and struggles in his career, Surya learnt that nothing will come easily to him, and he made it a habit to prove his mettle. His performances in the IPL and international cricket have been nothing short of stellar. As a batsman, he has demonstrated an uncanny ability to play under pressure, adapt to different conditions, and deliver match-winning performances. These qualities are the hallmark of a great leader," Aswalkar added further.
Aswalkar further emphasised that his protege's leadership capabilities were evident even in his early years. "Surya is a natural leader. He understands what it takes to be a leader, and he has shown that time and again," Aswalkar remarked.
He further added that while Gambhir's influence has been significant, Suryakumar's elevation to captaincy is primarily due to his strengths and achievements. "I see him as the future India captain. Surya will achieve it on his own strength, and not because of someone.
"Of course, someone like Gambhir as the coach will help him but he has already led India in a couple of T20I series and shown his capabilities. He understands what it takes to be a leader and we have observed him closely during Under-14, U-16 and U-19 days. He's got that knack of captaincy," Aswalkar further remarked.
While Aswalkar, along with thousands of cricket fans, didn't anticipate Surya's rise to India skipper so soon, he suggested that the collaboration between Suryakumar and Gambhir would be beneficial and that this partnership is poised to elevate Indian cricket to new heights.
