Why did Virender Sehwag fail to thank MS Dhoni?

Posted By:

Ajay Sharma, Ajay Jadeja, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble found a mention in Virender Sehwag's list of captains he wanted to thank. But one glaring omission from the group was World Cup winning skipper MS Dhoni.

Was it deliberate on Sehwag's part to ignore the wicketkeeper-batsman? This is the question doing the rounds in India. And it could be true. (Sehwag's Ferrari challenge to his sons)

Sehwag, who recently retired from international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), was felicitated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday (December 3) at his home ground - Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. This was before the start of the 4th India-South Africa Test.

The 37-year-old Sehwag, in his speech, after accepting the Indian cricket board's honour, thanked several people including his captains right from his Ranji Trophy days. But why did he not make a mention of Dhoni, who he played under for more than 5 years and also won 2011 World Cup?

"I want to thank my first captains Ajay Sharma (Ranji Trophy), Ajay Jadeja (1st ODI) and other captains Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble. I want to thank Sachin Tendulkar. I would like to thank all my fans for standing by me in my good and bad times," Sehwag said in his speech on the ground as both India and South African players were among the audience.

Later, when he spoke to "Star Sports" TV, he added few more names. The "Nawab of Najafgarh" said he forgot to mention those names in his speech. Again, Dhoni failed to get attention.

"There are lot more people to thank whom I have forgot to mention in my speech. Mr Arun Jaitley, Mr Ranbir Singh Mahendra, Mr Srinivasan. They all contributed to my career somehow, they looked after me when I got injured," Sehwag, who played 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is, said.

Happy times then

He had a special thank you message for all his fans as well. "I want to thank all of them who came to watch me, who backed me in by bad times. May be some time i have got out early and not able to entertain you but I hope you keep on cheering for Team India the way you guys have cheered for me," he said.

When Sehwag bid adieu to international stage, Dhoni, on Twitter, had paid rich tributes to him by comparing the Delhi batsman to Viv Richards. "Didn't see Viv Richards bat in person but I can proudly say I have witnessed Virender Sehwag tearing apart the best bowling attacks, he had tweeted on October 20.

Going by Sehwag's choice of names, it was evident that he wanted to skip Dhoni's. And as was his batting, Sehwag has his own style of speaking. He speaks his mind. And on Thursday morning, he indicated that all is not well between him and Dhoni.
