The legendary India all-rounder admitted that he is in awe of the "phenomenon called Kohli", and said the 27-year-old middle order batsman has matured into a "performer whose benchmarks would be near impossible to match".
Kohli helped the Indian side win yet another crucial game against Pakistan on Saturday, Mar 19. His match-winning gritty inning of 55 against Pakistan under pressure situation earned him laurels from across the cricketing fraternity. (Virat Kohli reveals why he bowed to Sachin Tendulkar)
Kohli's fine innings against Pakistan perhaps convinced Kapil that the Delhi-boy can transcend boundaries at will.
"The more I see of Virat the one step ahead of some of the greats like Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting. Let there be a debate but I am clear in my opinion that Virat, despite achievers like Joe Root and Kane Williamson, is the best in business in contemporary cricket in all three formats of the game. He will grow into the best of all time because of his awesome potential to adapt without fuss," the former India captain wrote in Mid-Day.
Praising Kohli, Sachin had once said that the Delhi-lad was capable of breaking his records and even legendary Viv Richards said he saw his reflection in young Kohli.
