Daniele Garozzo, a celebrated Italian fencer, has announced his retirement from competitive sport in 2024 due to a heart condition. Garozzo, who won gold in individual men's foil at the 2016 Rio Olympics, expressed gratitude for his journey in fencing. He remarked, "I have been lucky to live an extraordinary adventure in this sport."

In March 2022, Garozzo graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Reflecting on his academic journey, he noted, "It took me quite some time, 10 years and five months exactly, but not a single minute was wasted." He balanced his studies with his fencing career.
Garozzo's most notable sporting achievement was winning gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He also received the Collare d'Oro from the Italian Olympic Committee in 2018. His brother Enrico and partner Alice Volpi are also accomplished fencers, with Enrico winning silver in team epee at the 2016 Olympics and Volpi securing gold in individual foil at the world championships in 2018 and 2023.
In October 2017, Garozzo underwent surgery for a collapsed lung. Despite this setback, he continued to excel in fencing. In October 2016, his Olympic gold medal was stolen but was later recovered by a local woman who found it outside a train station.
Garozzo believes that sport offers more than just competition. He stated, "What we do from a sporting point of view, if we are only limited to the sporting event, wouldn't be that useful." He emphasises the importance of social unity and sharing positive values through sport.
Post-retirement, Garozzo plans to focus on his medical career. His academic background in medicine will guide his future endeavours. Additionally, he continues to be involved with the Future Champions Camp, an international fencing camp he founded in 2018 with his father Salvo and brother Enrico.
Garozzo resides in Rome with his partner Alice Volpi. He enjoys spending time with his dog and speaks both English and Italian fluently. His journey from a young fencer practising in a garage to an Olympic champion is truly inspiring.
