In early 2005, Gibilisco was hampered by a knee injury. These physical setbacks have tested his resilience and determination. Despite these challenges, he continued to pursue his passion for pole vaulting.
In July 2007, Gibilisco was suspended for two years by the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) due to his alleged involvement in the 'Oil for Drugs' case. It was claimed that he had taken or attempted to take banned substances from Dr. Carlo Santuccione. Initially, Gibilisco won his appeal against the ban.
However, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) reinstated the ban in October 2007. Gibilisco successfully appealed this decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in May 2008, clearing his name from the allegations.
Outside of athletics, Gibilisco enjoys riding motorcycles. He speaks Italian and lives in Formia, Italy. His nickname "Beppe" is well-known among fans and peers.
As of July 2024, Gibilisco continues to be an influential figure in pole vaulting. His journey reflects both his successes and the difficulties he has faced along the way.
