Tomoto first tried equestrian sports in grade two of primary school. Initially competing in equestrian jumping, he switched to eventing in 2015. This decision was influenced by the lack of eventing riders in Japan ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Encouraged by his sister's coach, Tomoto saw more opportunities in eventing.

He is affiliated with the Japan Racing Association (JPA) based in Tokyo. Since 2017, Tomoto has been coached by British eventer William Fox-Pitt. This collaboration began after Tomoto relocated to the UK to work with Fox-Pitt in Dorset, England.
