Additionally, he earned the Excellent Athlete Award from the Japan Gymnastics Association in 2013 and 2015.
One of Shirai's most notable achievements came in 2013 when he became the youngest male to win a gold medal on floor exercise at the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. He was just 17 years and 42 days old at that time.
Despite his successes, Shirai has faced several injuries. In August 2019, he suffered a left shoulder subluxation during training, which ruled him out of the All Japan Senior Championships. He also missed the 2019 American Cup due to a left ankle injury but competed in the All Japan Individual All-Around Championships despite the setback.
Earlier in his career, Shirai dealt with ligament damage and bone bruising in his right ankle in June 2014. In August 2013, he experienced a partial dislocation of his left shoulder joint during training on the horizontal bar.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed additional challenges for Shirai. In March 2020, he returned to his hometown Yokohama after being unable to use training facilities at Nippon Sport Science University. He trained with his former coach Haruo Mizuguchi for three months at Tsrumi Junior Artistic Gymnastics Club.
Reflecting on this period, Shirai said, "I was going through a tough time after suffering injuries in 2019. I even wanted to quit the sport at one time. Therefore it is true that I felt relieved about the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games."
Shirai has several elements named after him in both floor exercise and vault. The 'Shirai-Nguyen' is named after him and Vietnamese gymnast Nguyen Tuan Dat. In vault, 'Shirai-Kim Hee Hoon' is named after him and Korean gymnast Kim Hee-Hoon. Additionally, 'Shirai 2' and 'Shirai 3' are named after him in both disciplines.
Looking ahead, Shirai aims to win individual and team gold medals at future Olympic Games. His dedication to gymnastics remains unwavering as he continues to train and compete at the highest levels.
Kenzo Shirai's journey is a testament to his resilience and passion for gymnastics. With numerous accolades and a strong support system, he continues to be a prominent figure in artistic gymnastics.
