Lara Vadlau Biography

Vadlau's passion for sailing was nurtured by her parents' enthusiasm for the sport. She started sailing at a young age and quickly developed a deep connection with the water. Her parents remain the most influential figures in her career, providing constant support and encouragement.

Training and Club Affiliation

Currently, Vadlau trains with KYC Klagenfurt in Austria. Her rigorous training regime includes spending up to five hours a day on the water, coupled with fitness and strength conditioning. This demanding schedule is overseen by her national coach, Georg Fundak.

Educational Background

In addition to her sporting achievements, Vadlau has pursued higher education in Psychology at the University of Klagenfurt. She is multilingual, fluent in English, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Challenges and Injuries

Vadlau's career has not been without its challenges. In 2013, she tore the meniscus in her left knee during training but recovered in time for major championships. The following year, she tore the cruciate ligament and meniscus in her left knee again, requiring surgery. In 2015, she tore the cruciate ligament in her right knee while skiing but opted against surgery and resumed training seven weeks later.

Awards and Honours

Vadlau's talent has been recognised with several awards. In 2010, she received the Youth Sports Prize for Best Young Female Athlete of the Year. She was named Best Promoted Athlete of the Austrian military at the 2013 Soldier and Military Awards. Alongside her crewmate Jolanta Ogar, she was named Sports Team of the Year at both national and regional levels in 2014.

National Firsts

Vadlau has set several national records. In 2011, she and Chiara Frank became the first Austrian sailors to win gold at the world youth championships in Zadar, Croatia. Three years later, Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar became the first Austrian female sailors to win gold at the world championships in Santander, Spain.

Youngest Achievements

In 2013, Vadlau became the youngest sailor to win the overall World Cup classification. She achieved this milestone while competing with Jolanta Ogar, who is twelve years her senior.
