Asian Games 2023 Athletics: India's Kiran Baliyan started the country's account on the medal table in athletics by winning a silver medal in the women's shot put final in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Friday (September 29).
Kiran Baliyan put herself in the medal position with a brilliant throw of 17.36m, which came in her third attempt and no fourth competitor could go past her throw.

Her personal best of 17.93m came earlier this month in Chandigarh. This is the first women's shot put medal from an Indian since the 1951 Asian Games held in Delhi.
Lijiao Gong won the gold medal with five 19+ throws out of six while leading at 19.58m while Jiayuan Song of China clinched the silver at 18.92m. Manpreet Kaur - the second Indian shot putter in the competition - finished fifth with her best throw of 16.25m out of her six attempts in the final. India Medals at Asian Games 2023
The 24-year-old shot putter from Uttar Pradesh was born on March 6, 1999. A resident of Muzaffarnagar (UP), Kiran Baliyan's father, Satish Baliyan, is employed with the Uttar Pradesh Police's Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC).
Meerut's Kiran Baliyan won the gold medal in shot put with 17.17m at the Inter-State Athletics meet in Bhubaneswar earlier this year to become a national champion. She presented a strong claim by crossing the Asian Games qualifying mark of 16.30m in Odisha's capital.

Kiran's highest world ranking position was 161 prior to the Asian Games. She used to practice every morning and evening at the Meerut stadium under the watchful eyes of her mother Bobby Baliyan.
Before her father's posting in Meerut, Kiran's mother used to occasionally accompany her to the stadium in Agra. But the absence of a female trainer in Meerut prompted the mother to travel with her daughter daily.
