Asian Games 2023: Ojas Deotale, Abhishek Verma win gold and silver in individual compound archery

Asian Games 2023: Indian athlete Ojas Deotale capitalised on the men's individual compound archery competition in a historic all-Indian finale at the 19th Asian Games.

At the prestigious event, which is being held in Hangzhou, China, Indian archery has won nine medals, making it the second most successful sport for the country in the quadrennial showpiece which concludes on Sunday (October 8).

Deotale faced intense competition from fellow Indian archer, Abhishek Verma, ultimately reigning victorious and bringing home the gold medal. The final scores revealed a close contest, with Deotale outclassing Verma 149-147.

A global champion, Deotale earned his third gold medal at the games, having already secured titles in men's and mixed-team events. The tremendous performance of both Deotale and Verma led India to a total sweep of all five golds in compound archery.

Their individual performance resulted in winning the eighth and ninth respective archery medals for India, shooting the nation's overall medal count to a remarkable 99. Soon after, the women's kabaddi team clinched a gold to take India's tally to 100.

Earlier in the day, Jyothi Surekha Vennam clinched the gold medal in women's individual compound archery, accomplishing a rare treble. Aditi Swami added to the Indian glory with a bronze in the women's individual compound archery event. The Indian Woman's Kabaddi team's golden victory over Chinese Taipei brought the country's total medal tally to a golden 100.

The indomitable performances by the athletes at the Asian Games 2023 exemplifies India's rising prowess in global sports. The medal tally, climbing up to 100 with emphasis on the spectacular victories in archery, has placed India as a force to be reckoned with.
