In 2009, Tanui was named in the team for the Amman World Cross Country Championships, where he placed fourth. This achievement caught the attention of Mayaka, who assisted him in moving to Fukuoka, Japan. There, Tanui began to excel both on the track and within the Japanese corporate system.

Training and Opportunities

Tanui has highlighted the benefits of training in Japan, citing the availability of proper facilities that were lacking in his home country. He believes Japan is an excellent place for distance runners to develop their skills and make a name for themselves.

Challenges Faced

Despite his successes, Tanui has faced challenges. In 2008, he was refused permission to compete at the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh because he attempted to run without shoes. This incident did not deter him from pursuing his athletic career.

Current Status and Future Plans

As of July 2024, Tanui continues to train and compete with Team Kyudenko under the guidance of his personal coach, David Litteng. He speaks English fluently and enjoys farming as a hobby. His ambitions include winning a gold medal at future international competitions.
