Pedro Pichardo Biography

Pichardo's early career saw him representing Cuba. He competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the World Championships in 2013 and 2015. At just 20 years and 49 days old, he became the youngest athlete to win a medal in triple jump at the World Championships, securing silver in Moscow in 2013.

In March 2014, Pichardo faced a setback when he was banned from competing for the Cuban national team for one year after refusing to train with coach Ricardo Ponce. He returned to competition in May 2015, viewing the sanction as a positive experience that helped him reconnect with his potential.

Transition to Portugal

In 2017, Pichardo decided to leave Cuba and start a new life in Portugal. He joined the Benfica athletics club and made his international debut for Portugal the following year. He cited family reasons and the opportunity to train with his father as key motivations for his move.

Pichardo trains at the Athletics Municipal Complex in Setubal, Portugal. His dedication to training and family has been a cornerstone of his success. In 2021, he received the Medal of Honour in Setubal, recognising his contributions to athletics.

Personal Life and Philosophy

Pichardo resides in Setubal with his daughter. He is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. Known by the nickname "4P" due to all four of his initials starting with 'P', he lives by the motto "Never give up."

Despite facing injuries, including a microfracture to his right ankle that caused him to miss the 2016 World Indoor Championships, Pichardo remains resilient. His father continues to serve as his coach, providing guidance and support throughout his career.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Pichardo aims to set a world record and jump over 19 metres. His determination and focus on achieving these goals are evident in his rigorous training regime and past successes.

Pichardo's journey from Cuba to Portugal highlights his commitment to both family and sport. As he continues to compete at the highest levels, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes worldwide.
