At just 20 years and 49 days old, he became the youngest athlete to win a medal in triple jump at the World Championships, securing silver in Moscow in 2013.

In March 2014, Pichardo faced a setback when he was banned from competing for the Cuban national team for one year after refusing to train with coach Ricardo Ponce. He returned to competition in May 2015, viewing the sanction as a positive experience that helped him reconnect with his potential.
