Peng Soon Chan Biography

Chan's early interest in badminton was nurtured by his father. He idolised Indonesian player Hendra Setiawan and Korean player Kim Dong-Moon. These figures inspired him to pursue excellence in the sport. Chan is right-handed and has been coached by Rexy Mainaky, a national coach from Indonesia.

Milestones and Achievements

One of Chan's significant achievements came at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. He and his mixed doubles partner, Goh Liu Ying, won a silver medal. This made them the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to win an Olympic medal. This achievement is a highlight of Chan's career.

Challenges and Injuries

Chan faced challenges along the way. In June 2011, he missed the Thailand Open due to a back injury. Despite this setback, he continued to strive for success in his sport.

New Partnerships

In late 2021, Chan parted ways with Goh Liu Ying after 13 years of partnership. They had differences in their future plans. While Chan wanted to continue playing internationally, Liu Ying preferred to relax more. After discussions, they decided that the 2021 World Tour Finals in Bali would be their last tournament together.

Following this, Chan teamed up with Valeree Siow and Toh Ee Wei before partnering with Cheah Yee See in June 2022. Chan expressed gratitude for his journey with Liu Ying, stating they had no regrets as they did their best together.

Ambitions and Future Plans

Looking ahead, Chan aims to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This goal reflects his ongoing commitment to badminton and his desire to achieve further success on the international stage.

Other Activities

Beyond badminton, Chan ventured into business in 2020. He launched a company selling protective face masks, cleansers, and disinfectants. A portion of the profits was donated to Malaysian badminton players affected by event cancellations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chan is married to Maye Cham and has four children: sons Milton (born 2011) and Julian (born 2019), and daughters Hannah (born 2015) and Lea (born 2020). He speaks English, Hokkien, Malay, and Mandarin.
