Polly Powrie Biography

Powrie began sailing at age 11 at the Kohimarama Yacht Club in Auckland. The sport is popular in her family, which influenced her choice. She represents the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and is coached by Nathan Handley.

Achievements and Awards

Powrie's most memorable sporting achievement is winning gold in the 470 class at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She and her crewmate Jo Aleh were named the 2014 Distance Sportswomen of the Year by Massey University. In 2013, they received the World Female Sailor of the Year Award from the International Sailing Federation.

Additionally, Powrie was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013. She and Aleh became the first female New Zealand sailors in 20 years to win Olympic gold when they triumphed in London. Barbara Kendall was the last to achieve this feat in 1992.

Challenges and Injuries

In 2011, Powrie broke her collarbone, which was a significant setback. Despite this injury, she continued to excel in her sport.

Team Jolly

Powrie first sailed with Jo Aleh in a 420 boat during the 2006/07 season. They later moved to the 470 class after Aleh competed in the Laser class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The duo aimed to defend their gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Their partnership has not been without its challenges. Powrie mentioned that they have had moments of tension but have learned from these experiences, leading to more consistent performances.

Name Change

Powrie was given the nickname Polly by a cousin, which eventually stuck. She officially changed her name by deed poll to avoid confusion.
