Her first coach, Ezio Triccoli, was the most influential person in her career. German fencer Anja Fichtel was her idol. Vezzali's sporting philosophy is about finding the right moment to act by combining time, distance, and speed.
Vezzali faced significant challenges during her career. In November 2011, she was hospitalised with head and abdominal injuries after a car crash in Perugia, Italy. She also underwent knee surgery in 2006 to repair ligament damage.
Vezzali was Italy's flag bearer at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She was named a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2000 and a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2008.
Vezzali resides in Jesi, Italy, with her husband Domenico Giugliano and their sons Pietro and Andrea. Giugliano played professional football for several clubs in the Italian league. Vezzali is fluent in English and Italian and holds a degree in Accounting from the Technical Institute of Commerce in Jesi.
Vezzali retired from fencing after the 2016 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. She decided to retire after missing qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games. In January 2013, she accepted an offer from outgoing Italian premier Mario Monti to be considered for a seat in parliament. Her seat was confirmed in February 2013.
Vezzali equalled the Italian record of six summer Olympic gold medals with victory in team foil at the 2012 Games in London. She also became one of only four athletes to win a medal in the same event at five different Olympic Games. In 2009, she appeared on the Italian version of 'Dancing With the Stars' and released her autobiography 'A Viso Scoperto' [With Uncovered Face] in 2006.
