He began diving at age seven in Shantou, People's Republic of China. Scouted by a diving coach soon after starting primary school, his journey in the sport took off early. Representing Guangdong Province, he trained under coaches Nie Yudi and He Weiyi.

His most memorable sporting achievement came when he won gold in the 3m springboard event at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. This victory remains a significant highlight of his career.
His career has not been without challenges. In early 2014, he broke his right ankle and underwent surgery. This injury led him to switch from platform to springboard diving in 2015. He injured the same ankle again in 2016. In late 2019, he sustained a foot injury that sidelined him for a month. Additionally, he had a waist injury in May 2020.
He was named Male Diver of the Year by Swimming World magazine in 2021. The International Swimming Federation (FINA) also honoured him as Male Diver of the Year in 2019 and 2021. He received the National May 1st Labour Medal from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and was named an Elite Athlete of International Class by the General Administration of Sport of China in 2016.
At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he made history by winning gold in both the men's individual and men's synchronised 3m springboard events. This achievement made him the first male diver to claim titles in both events at the Olympic Games, World Cup, and world championships.
Former coach Wu Guocun has been the most influential person in his career. His sporting philosophy is encapsulated by his motto: "Dreams need action."
