Yulia Bakastova, a left-handed fencer from Ukraine, began her journey in the sport at age 12 in Kyiv. Inspired by the fencing competitions of the 2008 Olympic Games, she took up the sport on her grandmother's suggestion. She has since become a prominent athlete, competing for Ukraine and training with Virtus Scherma Bologna in Italy.

Between ages 19 and 21, Bakastova worked as a coach while continuing her education at the National University of Ukraine on Physical Education and Sport in Kyiv. She enjoyed introducing children to fencing and supporting their growth. However, she decided to focus on her competitive career after joining the senior national team.
Bakastova made her international debut in 2017, representing Ukraine. Her dedication and skill have earned her the title of Honoured Master of Sport in Ukraine. She continues to train under coaches Andrea Terenzio and Yevgeniy Statsenko.
Outside of fencing, Bakastova enjoys spending time with friends and relatives. She admires US swimmer Michael Phelps and lives by the motto: "Nobody says it will be easy but, in the end, you will be grateful to yourself for going through all this."
Looking ahead, Bakastova aims to continue competing at the highest levels. Her journey from a young girl inspired by Olympic athletes to an accomplished fencer is a testament to her dedication and passion for the sport.
Bakastova's story is one of perseverance and commitment. As she continues to compete internationally, she remains a significant figure in Ukrainian fencing.
