Zhang credits her husband as the most influential person in her career. His support has been crucial to her success in the sport.
Zhang made history by becoming the first woman to win a mixed-sex shooting event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She won gold in skeet shooting. However, after these Games, the International Shooting Sport Federation barred mixed-sex competitions.
This decision meant women could no longer compete in skeet shooting alongside men. Consequently, Zhang could not defend her Olympic title at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Since then, separate men's and women's skeet events have been held.
Zhang's entry into China's sporting infrastructure began in 1976 when she was selected for special training as a basketball talent. Several years later, she transitioned to skeet shooting for the local Sichuan team. In 1989, she graduated to the national team for the first time.
As of July 2024, Zhang continues to be a prominent figure in shooting sports, with plans to further contribute to the sport's development in China.
