Colombo, Sep 15: After a hiatus of eight years, the Sri Lankan cricket team claimed a sensational victory in an ODI game over Pakistan in a crucial Super Four game marred by the unyielding rain in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo.
A nail-biting encounter ended in the favour of Sri Lankans, who emerged victorious on the last ball of this high-pressure match-thereby making it their first win over Pakistan in one-day internationals in eight long years.

Kusal Mendis masterfully led the Sri Lankan offensive with an admirable contribution of 91 runs, and Charith Asalanka held the fort with a gritty, unbeaten 49-run knock. Their combined efforts guided Sri Lanka to overcome Pakistan by two wickets- a thrilling outcome that set the stage for an intense Asia Cup final against seven-time champions, India.
Mendis missed out on a well-deserved third ODI century but the right-handed wicketkeeper-batter was adjudged the player of the match for his effort. With their second straight, and 11th overall, entry into the final, the Sri Lankan side - who missed several key players due to injuries - showed true grit and character in the tournament.
Despite losing an early wicket, Sri Lanka's response was remarkable. Mendis and Pathum Nissanka (29) steadied the Lankan innings after the early loss, compiling a valuable 57-run stand for the second wicket.
After Nissanka's departure, Mendis shared a valuable 100-run stand with in-form Sadeera Samarawickrama (48 off 51 balls) and brought Sri Lanka into the game. Samarawickrama was stumped by Rizwan off Iftikhar Ahmed's bowling when the scoreboard read 177-3 in 29.4 overs.
Sri Lankans suffered a mini-collapse after the 35th over as Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Dunith Wellalage departed. Pramod Madushan also got run out in the final over but Asalanka remained cool as a cucumber and remained unbeaten till the end.
The trio of Mendis-Samarawickrama-Asalanka effectively countered the Pakistani bowling assault, largely led by debutant Zaman Khan, who showcased his potential with a bowling performance reminiscent of Lasith Malinga, and Shaheen Shah Afridi - who tilted the game in the opposition's favour by getting back-to-back wickets in the penultimate over.

The successful chase culminated in a compelling climax on the game's final over. Asalanka got the strike on the third ball of the last over and promptly dispatched a boundary on the fourth, leaving Sri Lanka needing two runs off the last delivery.
The left-handed batter then seized the moment and drove the ball towards a vast gap in mid-wicket, securing a comfortable double in the company of the promising young bowler, Matheesha Pathirana.
A commanding show with the bat from opener Abdullah Shafique (52), and later a century-stand between Mohammad Rizwan (86) and Iftikhar Ahmed (47) took Pakistan to a competitive score of 252 for 7 off 42 overs. But the Men in Green would be disappointed with their bowling effort and an unimpressive captaincy from Babar Azam.
While the Sri Lankan win was undoubtedly significant for breaking the eight-year-long domination of Pakistan, it also upped the ante for the upcoming fixtures. Dasun Shanaka-led Lankan side's dramatic victory saw them schedule a clash against the Indian cricket team in the Asia Cup final.
The result also meant an unfortunate end to the prospects of a much-anticipated Indo-Pak summit clash in this continental cricket carnival. Fans of the two teams were waiting with bated breaths for the third clash within a fortnight between the arch-rivals but Sri Lanka had other ideas.

Sri Lanka emerged triumphant in a high-octane face-off against Pakistan. It not only marked the end of an eight-year drought for Sri Lanka against Pakistan in one-day internationals but also set up an intriguing championship showdown against India.
As the Asia Cup 2023 draws to a close, one can expect a thrilling contest in the final that stands to exemplify the high-pitched fervour and unyielding spirit that epitomizes Asian cricket.
The riveting climax in the Super Four game indeed underlines the unpredictable beauty of this sport. It illuminates the essence of cricket and, indeed, underscores that, in the game's grand theatre, it is never over till the last ball is bowled. Also, a strong Sri Lankan side bodes well for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, starting next month in India.
