Top morning for England. 5-82 to leave Australia on 326-8 after the strong position they were in overnight. Joe Root must be proud of his troops for the effort they have put in on what looked a flat deck. A record breaking day for Alastair Cook and he hasn't finished yet. He will have eyes set on 250 but with Jimmy Anderson the only wicket left he might have to farm the strike and score some quick runs. When Australia come out to bat in their second innings they will start behind the game for the first time this series so they will have to show some fight and play the solid cricket which they have done in the three previous Tests. With cloud cover and fresh England bowlers though it will not be easy.
Well that didn't last long. Cummins is on the money straight away and Anderson gloves it to the man at short leg. Cook will remain unbeaten on 244 and he has carried the bat through the innings and is the first Englishman to do that since Michael Atherton. Australia will start 164 runs behind but a little bit of drizzle has started to fall, hopefully it's nothing major.

Alastair Cook will sleep tonight. He has batted all day, breaking records along the way, and reached the close of play on 244 not out. He has single-handedly put England in the driving seat going into day four with a lead of 164 and the Aussies weary after two long days in the field. Australia tried everything they could but the pitch is a batting paradise once you are set and Cook never looked in any trouble. Australia have a lot of work to do in the next couple of days but they can take heart from how the pitch is playing and there is potential for some dodgy weather around tomorrow. Steve Smith and Joe Root shake hands and that is match drawn. It has been inevitable since lunch with Smith defending with such ease and he had an able partner in Mitch Marsh who played his part.
The pitch didn't add much life into the game for batsmen or bowlers and that has been a huge talking point with 20 wickets being very hard to get for either team. England have a lot of positives to take from this game though with Alastair Cook breaking records on his way to scoring 244 and he put his team in a good position to win until rain and Smith dampened the spirits.
A whitewash is off the table now as we move to Sydney for the final Test where we could see a couple of changes for both teams. See you then.
