Lalit Yadav played the best knock of his IPL career as he helped Delhi Capitals pull off a heist from behind and defeat Mumbai Indians by four wickets in their opening game of IPL 2022. The first doubleheader of the 15th edition couldn't have had a better start in a high-scoring encounter.
Chasing 178, DC reached home quite comfortably as Lalit Yadav (48* off 38) and Axar Patel (38* off 17) forged an unbeaten 75-run-partnership off just 30 deliveries with eight balls to spare. MI thus once again failed to win an opening game in the IPL as their bowling was a major letdown for the five-time champions.
Prithvi Shaw and Tim Seifert had given Delhi a fine start in the run chase of 178 but the Mumbai Indians bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals to keep the chasing side under the pump.
Spinner Murugan Ashwin dismissed Siefert (21 off 14) and Mandeep Singh (0) in his first over to derail Delhi's charge. Captain Rishabh Pant (1) and all-rounder Rovman Powell left the team in the lurch with poor shot selection and they were five down in under 10 overs.
Just when the game looked slipping away from their grip, Lalit Yadav, Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel turned the tides for the Capitals and helped their team come on top in a cracker of a contest.
Earlier in the day, Ishan Kishan justified his big price tag after the explosive MI' opener hammered an unbeaten 81 off 48 balls to guide his team to 177-5 after being put in to bat first.
Ishan and captain Rohit Sharma gave Mumbai a fine start by sharing a stand of 67 off 50 deliveries. Delhi Capitals' chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav derailed Mumbai's charge as he picked up three crucial wickets in the middle overs.
Mumbai Indians' kept losing wickets at the other end but Ishan was unfazed by that and kept the scoreboard ticking and punishing those loose deliveries.
The left-handed batter notched up his 10th IPL fifty off just 34 deliveries when he hit Axar Patel for a maximum. Playing a sensible knock, the southpaw along with some cameos from Tilak Verma, Tim David and Daniel Sams Kishan ensured Mumbai posted a competitive 177-5 on the board.Kishan notched up his 50 off just 34 deliveries.

In the first match of IPL 2022's first double-header, Delhi Capitals face record title-holders Mumbai Indians at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
While 6 of the 10 franchises including the two new sides have a new skipper at the helm, Delhi and Mumbai are two of the four sides that have retained their captains from previous seasons.
Rishabh Pant will continue to lead Delhi Capitals, while the most successful skipper in the cash rich league, Rohit Sharma will lead Mumbai Indians.
Having fallen in the final hurdle, DC will aim to get off to a winning start following a decent auction and retention. MI, on the other hand, will similarly look to start their quest for a sixth IPL title with a win after a poor outing in 2021.
Despite missing several key players, both teams possess great T20 talent and will look to get across the line before the missing stars join the squads to find the right combination for the remainder of the tournament.
DC made some smart retentions including Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel followed by a good auction.
But, DC will be without the services of five overseas players in David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Mustafizur Rahman.
MI, who retained Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard, also managed to buy back Ishan Kishan at the auction.
However, for their season opener, MI will be without Suryakumar along side Jofra Archer, who will not play any match this season.
In head to head battle, MI has 16 wins against DC, who have 14 wins in 30 meetings.
This will be the second meeting between the two sides at the Brabourne Stadium, where MI beat DC back in 2010.
Form and head-to-head will go out of the equation as it's a brand new season. So, let's wait and see what's in store for today.
