The IPL debutants began their journey in the league with a mouthwatering action-packed game as Gujarat Titans clinched a thrilling win over Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
In an edge-of-the-seat contest, Abhinav Manohar (15 off 7) and Rahul Tewatia (40 off 24) held their nerves to hand the Titans a winning start. Chasing a respectable 159, Tewatia and David Miller rose to the occasion to guide Titans to a five-wicket win over Super Giants.
After losing opener Shubman Gill for a duck and Vijay Shankar for 4, Matthew Wade and skipper GT Hardik Pandya steadied the chase with a 48-ball 57 partnership to keep Gujarat on course. Tewatia played a match-winning crucial knock as Gujarat began their IPL journey with a win.
Earlier, Titans skipper Hardik Pandya elected to bowl first against the KL Rahul-led Super Giants. The two sides had a memorable start to their IPL journey as Titans pacer Mohammed Shami struck on the very first delivery of the match to remove Lucknow skipper Rahul.
Shami (3/25) bowled a sizzling opening spell as he rocked the Titans top-order and reduce Lucknow to 20/3 in 3.3 overs. But Deepak Hooda (55 off 41) and Ayush Badoni (54 off 41) pulled the Lucknow side out of the woods with a fiery partnership. Hammering a 87 off 68 ball partnership, Hooda and Badoni smashed half-centuries to guide Lucknow past the 150-run mark.
Shami's three-wicket spell restricted Rahul's side to 158/6. Varun Aaron picked up two, while Rashid Khan pocketed 1.

New entrants Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants will aim to start their IPL 2022 campaign on a winning note when they clash tonight at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Both teams have added a lot of hard-hitting all-rounders to their squads at the mega auction following a good set of draft picks. But it's LSG, who have assembled a much better squad compared to GT, who are overloaded in the bowling department.
GT chose their eventual skipper Hardik Pandya as one of their drafts along with Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan, while LSG too picked skipper KL Rahul, Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis.
Both sides also were dealt a blow weeks before the season as one overseas player each pulled out of the tournament. England pacer Mark Wood and opener Jason Roy are the players that opted out.
Now, the two teams, who have a few players missing for the start of the season, will looked to set up strong 11s to get across the line on a testing Wankhede track, where KKR defeated CSK in low-scoring affair.
Gujarat could most likely open with young Gill and Matthew Wade, who is also a wicket-keeper. And would heavily bank on the performance of their skipper Hardik, who has loads of experience playing at the Wankhede with Mumbai Indians.
Rahul Tewatia, Vijay Shankar and Abhinav Manohar would also need to shoulder responsibility in the middle order along with David Miller.
Key pacer Mohammed Shami will lead the bowling attack alongside Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson. Another important cog in their wheel is leggie Rashid Khan.
Lucknow, on the other hand, will open with skipper Rahul and Quinton De Kock, who is expected to keep wickets as well. Then it will be all-rounders Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya along with batters Evin Lewis and Manish Pandey in the middle order.
The bowling is likely to be spearheaded by Avesh Khan and Dushmantha Chameera. Spin will be handled by Ravi Bishnoi, who can deceive the batters with his googlies.
Considering the wickets, team winning the toss, would opt to bat first in Wankhede, but with dew setting in early and playing a key role in the season opener, the captains may look to chase.
