  • This will be Afghanistan's inaugural Test match; they along with Ireland were awarded Test status 12 months ago, the first nations to gain admission since Bangladesh in 2000.
  • India come into this match having only tasted defeat once in their last 27 home Tests; winning 20 of those outings (D6), that sole defeat came against Australia in Pune (February 2017).
  • India have not lost at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium since 2005 in Test cricket; they have managed to record three victories and three draws in the time since that loss versus Pakistan.
  • These two sides have met three times before in international cricket, with India winning all three clashes; two T20Is (2010 & 2012) and one ODI (2014).
  • Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 220 Test wickets in India at an average of 23; only two bowlers have ever claimed more there (Kumble 350 & Harbhajan Singh 265).
  • Of the batsmen to record 10+ innings during 2017, only Steve Smith (76.8) and Virat Kohli (75.6) averaged more in Tests than Cheteshwar Pujara (67.1); however he's only managed a rate of 16.7 across six Tests knocks in 2018, he also comes into this game on the back of posting just 100 County Championship runs across his eight innings for Yorkshire this season (12.5 average).
