OUT! Caught. Josh Hazlewood to Mohammed Shami. Short, off stump on the back foot pulling, Gloved to wicketkeeper, by Paine. What a start that is. Hazlewood sends down a fairly tame short ball that Shami wants to help on it's way, but he can only feather a glove through to Paine who takes it smartly down the legside. The Aussie openers charge off the field to prepare for a crucial phase of play, beginning their reply to India's total of 250.

Good morning, welcome to coverage of Day Two of the First Test between Australia and India at the Adelaide Oval. Yesterday, Cheteshwar Pujara proved that a traditional approach to batting in the modern age is still a smart way to go about building an innings, as he rescued the tourists from a precarious position. For more than six hours India's number three displayed immense levels of concentration and discipline, while those around him played loose strokes to give their wickets away. Despite his epic knock, Australia will be happy with their efforts with the ball on what was a scorching day to start the series. The hosts were especially electric in the field, with Usman Khawaja taking a blinder at gully and Pat Cummins producing an athletic direct hit late in the day. Today, attention will be on the new look batting order for the Aussies, as Marcus Harris plays his first Test innings and Peter Handscomb makes a return to the international stage.

OUT! Run Out. Josh Hazlewood to Cheteshwar Pujara. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, to mid wicket, direct hit by Cummins. What an incredible piece of fielding by Pat Cummins. After bowling 19 overs in the scorching heat he still has the energy to swoop down and unleash an underarm flick to catch Pujara a few inches short of the non-striker's end. What a way to boost the Australian spirits off what will now be the final ball of the day.

What a start to this Test series we have seen at the Adelaide Oval today. Australia's pace bowlers came out fired up to reduce India to 41/4 in the morning session as the top order all wafted loosely outside the off stump. Cheteshwar Pujara showed them the way to succeed, disciplined defense punctuated by measured attack when the opportunity came. The number three reached his 16th Test century late in the day to rescue the tourists from a tricky position, but the hosts had the last laugh when an outstanding athletic run out by Pat Cummins sent the centurion on his way. All in all a fairly balanced and immensely interesting start to the Test summer down under.

  • 86.5

SIX! Mitchell Starc to Cheteshwar Pujara. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed in the air under control over deep backward point for 6 runs. Dismissively carved over point for another six, Pujara is really enjoying himself this evening. Australia are leaking runs at a worrying rate.

  • 86.4

FOUR! Mitchell Starc to Cheteshwar Pujara. Length ball, down leg side on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control past deep backward square leg for 4 runs. Pujara is really cashing in now against a tired attack. Starc hasn't been at his best with this second new ball.

Mitchell Starc to Cheteshwar Pujara. Back of a length, off stump on the back foot cutting, to deep backward point for 2 runs, fielded by Lyon.

  • 84.3

Mitchell Starc to Cheteshwar Pujara. In-swinging length ball, down leg side on the front foot working, to deep mid wicket for 2 runs, fielded by Cummins. There it is, a sweet sixteenth Test century for Pujara and undoubtedly one of his best. He's really saved India on the first day of this seris. There haven't been many shots for the highlight reel, it's been more about steady accumulation and steadfast concentration - two underrated facets of batting in the modern game.

FOUR! Josh Hazlewood to Cheteshwar Pujara. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed past deep backward square leg for 4 runs. Much more convincing this time, rolling his wrists to keep it down and hammering it into the gap. Glorious stuff from India's number three.

  • 83.5

SIX! Josh Hazlewood to Cheteshwar Pujara. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, top edge in the air uncontrolled over fine leg for 6 runs. Takes on the short ball and gets full reward. After plodding along for most of the day Pujara has come out of his shell this evening. I'm not sure he was entirely in control but it doesn't matter when the ball sails over the fence.

OUT! Caught. Mohammed Shami to Josh Hazlewood. Seaming away back of a length, outside off stump no foot movement cutting, top edge to wicketkeeper, by Pant. And another, Shami mops things up nicely for the tourists. Hazlewood wafts lazily and Pant accepts his sixth catch of the innings. The Indian openers charge off the field, they will start with a small but handy lead of 15 runs.

It's still drizzling in Adelaide but it should be okay for play to continue. India have secured what could turn out to be a crucial lead. It's going to be difficult for their batsmen in overcast conditions, the new ball will likely move around for the Aussie quick men. Josh Hazlewood's first delivery will be a hat-trick ball, more drama to consider.

  • 98.3

OUT! Caught. Mohammed Shami to Travis Head. Seaming away back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot Steer, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Pant. Got him, Shami is so good to left-handers and he's got the big wicket of Head who trudges off frustrated. It's yet another catch for Pant, his fifth of the innings and now India will surely secure a lead. Kohli lets out a roar of pure emotion. The angled blade has cost Head, it's always frought with danger especially with the ball moving further away off the pitch.

  • 98.2

Mohammed Shami to Nathan Lyon. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot working, to square leg for 1 run, fielded by Rahane.

  • 98.1

SIX! Mohammed Shami to Nathan Lyon. Short, outside off stump on the back foot hooking, well timed in the air under control over deep backward square leg for 6 runs. Wow, that is an extraordinary stroke. Lyon nonchalantly hoiks Shami into the crowd with a vintage hook and it's taken by a fan in the first row. Clean striking by Lyon.

FOUR! Ravichandran Ashwin to Nathan Lyon. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot sweeping, top edge in the air uncontrolled past fine leg for 4 runs. Lyon loves to sweep but the bounce causes this to balloon up off the top edge. It's over the head of the lurking short fine leg and it trickles into the rope. The crowd is loving this innings by Lyon.

OUT! Caught. Mitchell Starc to Ishant Sharma. Short, outside off stump on the back foot Fended, Spliced in the air uncontrolled to short leg, by Finch. That's the end of that. Ishant tries to get on top of the bounce but can only pop it up to the man under the lid, meaning Australia have been set 323 to win.

That was a frenzied passage of play. India came out with clear intent to score quickly, but in doing so they have allowed Australia a sniff. Nathan Lyon picked up six wickets as the tourists kept attacking him.

OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Mohammed Shami. Off break length ball, outside off stump down the track Slog, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep mid wicket, by Harris. Another one, six for Lyon. Shami doesn't hang around at the best of times and in this situation he decides to go all out attack from ball one. He's looking to smoke this out of the ground but it settles into the hands of the man in the deep. Lyon on a hat-trick now, anticipation builds around the Adelaide Oval.

  • 103.1

OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Ajinkya Rahane. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot reverse sweeping, top edge in the air uncontrolled to point, by Starc. Lyon has a five wicket haul and the last recognised batsman is gone. Rahane was looking to try something different with only the bowlers for company at the crease but he just presents Starc with the simplest of catches. After all his hard work Lyon deserves this success.

OUT! Caught. Mitchell Starc to Ravichandran Ashwin. Short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, top edge in the air uncontrolled to deep square leg, by Harris. The game is really moving on quickly now. India have come out all guns blazing since lunch but they risk being bowled out soon. Ashwin loves to take on the short ball, however that's always going to be dangerous against a bowler with the pace of Starc. It loops high off the top edge and the debutant Harris pouches it easily. Rahane is running out of partners.

APPEAL! Ishant Sharma to Pat Cummins. In-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad to third slip for no runs, fielded by Kohli, appeal made for L.B.W.

This Test match has been hard-fought the whole way through and that morning session was no different. India managed to pick up a couple of wickets, however Tim Paine has grafted well to keep his side in the contest. Shaun Marsh was looking good for his half century, but Jasprit Bumrah provided the key breakthrough for the tourists by getting one to kiss his outside edge. Stayed tuned because it's shaping up for a nail-biting finish in Adelaide.
