Commentary
Prabath Jayasuriya is back on as Keshara Nuwantha gets a bit of a break.
Fernando switches to over the wicket now, keeping the length well short and this is just angled across off. Padikkal stands tall and just sways away from the line of the ball.
Back of a length, over the stumps, Padikkal defends it to the off side.
Geez, that's a sharp one from Fernando. Short-pitched delivery, banged into the pitch at 133.5 kph and right at the batter. The ball swerves a bit and Padikkal does well to duck under this one.
Another effort ball, bowled well short and outside off, around head height. Padikkal has a poke at it, looking to ramp it away and nearly edges it behind. Fernando is a bit disheartened, feeling he deserved an edge there.
Shorter in length, not quite a bumper but angled in towards the rib cage. Padikkal gets up on his toes and keeps it down.
Fernando keeps peppering the short length. This is banged in short over off, a bit of a spongy bounce on offer and Padikkal ducks under it.
Floated up on a good length, outside off, this one just grips a touch. Padikkal presses back and smacks it down to sweeper cover for one more. The 50-run stand is up between these two.
Quicker and flatter at 90 kph, outside off. Gill stabs it between point and covers for a single.
FOUR! Should have been stopped. Floated up outside off, Shubman Gill skips down the track, gets to the pitch of the ball and drives it just to the right of the short cover fielder for a boundary.
Tossed up outside off, on a length and this one carries through nicely. Gill leaves it alone.
Nuwantha sees Gill stepping out and flights it up, turning the ball in from outside off. Gill tries to block but pads it away.
Flatter trajectory, attacking middle, Gill stays back and dabs it into the leg side.
The first 30 minutes have flown by in the second session. India have not been allowed easy runs with just 22 runs scored in the session so far. But Padikkal and Gill have stretched the partnership to 44 runs and are looking progressively more comfortable at the crease.
Three bumpers in a row, Asitha giving it his all. Fernando comes around the wicket, hammering the ball into the pitch and angling it towards the front shoulder. However, the ball gets extra lift and Padikkal ducks for cover yet again.
Another bumper, this time over middle, coming in around face height, but again, Padikkal ducks under the ball.
Good bumper, Asitha really bends his back this time. Banged in halfway down the pitch, over leg and this one shoots up off the deck. Padikkal does well to duck under it as well.
Length ball on the fourth stump line, Gill opens the bat face late and eases it to the left of point for a quick single. Good, positive running.
Pitched fuller on off, at 134.5 kph, Gill prods halfway forward and jabs it towards mid on.
Short of a good length, sliding into the pads, tucked away to short mid-wicket.
FOUR! Classic! Floated up, too full and on off. Padikkal stays leg side of the ball and manages to get under it, lofting it over extra cover for an eye-catching boundary.
Tossed up straighter at the stumps, Padikkal blocks it down the line.
Padikkal gets tangled up now. Dragged a bit shorter, angled well into the batter. Padikkal rocks back to pull but ends up getting hit on the pads.
Tossed up on middle and off, a punchy off drive from Padikkal, he gets it past the diving bowler but straight to mid off.
Pushed through a bit quicker at 89.3 kph, full and on middle. Padikkal smothers it away.
Nicely drifted into leg, turns a bit as well. Padikkal defends it right under the eyes.
Pushed full and wide outside off, Gill extends the arms and punches the drive through square covers and picks up a couple of runs in the deep.
A big appeal for LBW, but turned down. Might be too high or even sliding down leg, and there might have even been an inside edge. No review is taken. Just a few inches fuller on middle, nips in. Gill gets caught on the crease as he looks to block but the ball goes past the inside edge to hit the front pad. Later, UltraEdge shows that there was actually an inside edge. Good decision from the umpire.
Good-length delivery, around the top of off and middle. Gill gets forward and nudges it to the leg side. Padikkal inquires about the single but Gill turns it down.
FOUR! Uh, oh! A teaser for the fielder in the deep and he'll be disappointed to have not stopped that, especially after putting in the hard yards. Full again, straighter in line, Gill clips it sweetly and through mid-wicket. The deep square leg fielder runs the length of the ropes to his left and slides in but fails to palm the ball back in. 100 comes up for India!
