Pat Cummins announced his arrival in IPL 2022 with a fierce knock of 56 off 15 balls to power Kolkata Knight Riders to a 5-wicket win over Mumbai Indians at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
Cummins equalled the record for the fastest fifty in IPL with the knock that included 6 sixes and 4 fours, while Venkatesh Iyer remained unbeaten on 50 off 41 balls as KKR chased down a target of 162 with 24 balls to spare.
KKR were reduced to 101 for 5 in 13.1 overs, losing hopes following the dismissal of Andre Russell.
But Cummins came out to bat after being hit for 23 in the last over when he bowled, and responded in some style by taking his compatriot Daniel Sams and Jasprit Bumrah to the cleaners.
For MI, Murugan Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 25 in 3 overs, while Sams (1 for 50) and Tymal Mills (2 for 38) also chipped in with wickets, but could not help the record champions break the winless streak.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians struggled after being put into bat and were reduced to 3 for 55 in 11 overs, losing openers Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and debutant Dewald Brevis
However, MI could post a challenging total of 161 for 5 in 20 overs thanks to the 83-run stand between Suryakumar Yadav (52 off 36 balls) and Tilak Varma (38* off 27 balls) followed by a late carnage by Pollard, who struck 3 sixes in the last over bowled by Cummins.
For KKR, Cummins (2 for 49 in 4 overs), Umesh Yadav (1 for 25 in 4 overs) and Varun Chakaravarthy (1 for 32 in 4 overs) were among the wickets.

Mumbai Indians will be eager to get their IPL 2022 campaign back on track when they face the in-form Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday (April 5).
Mumbai Indians under Rohit Sharma have made a characteristically slow start to the IPL 2022, losing two matches to date.
But it will not be good for them to leave it to further late as they need to get on to the table.
On the other hand, the Knight Riders, led by Shreyas Iyer, have dished out some good efforts and looked a confident and balanced unit.
Possible Playing XI:
Kolkata Knight Riders: Ajinkya Rahane, Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Sam Billings (Wk), Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Mavi.
Mumbai Indians: Ishan Kishan (Wk), Rohit Sharma (Captain), Anmolpreet Singh, Thilak Varma, Kieron Pollard, Tim David, Daniel Sams, M Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Tymal Mills, Jaydev Unadkat (for Basil Thampi).
