APPEAL! OUT changed by umpire to NOT OUT after REFERRAL. Tim Southee to David Willey. Length ball, to leg moves in front driving, inside edge to backward point for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W.
Southee is the only one who goes up for the appeal but the umpire agrees with him. The finger is raised and Willey has reviewed straight away. Clear inside edge so the decision will get overturned and Willey won't get another run as the ball is called dead.
They finish on 284-8 after a couple of big partnerships between Jason Roy and Joe Root, then Root and Jos Buttler. It could have been more with England entering the final 10 overs on 215 but Boult and Southee were superb at the death, hitting their yorkers with precision. It hasn't been the high scoring game everyone was expecting which could be down to the slow nature of the pitch so New Zealand will have to bat well to chase this down. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are going to be crucial in the middle overs.
OUT! Run Out. Tim Southee to David Willey. Yorker, outside off stump on the front foot driving, back to bowler, fielded by Southee. Buttler was running no matter where the ball went so he could get back on strike for the final delivery. Once Southee had collected it he had the simple task of running to the stumps and knocking off the bails.

SIX! Tim Southee to Jos Buttler. Off cutter back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. Crunched for six. Nowhere near the yorker and with pace off it sat in the pitch to be hammered away.

FOUR! Tim Southee to David Willey. Half volley, outside off stump moves in front driving, inside edge past third man for 4 runs. Bonus runs for England. No chance for the keeper after he was wrong-footed.
SIX! Trent Boult to Jos Buttler. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump backing away driving, well timed in the air under control over long on for 6 runs. Finally a length delivery which Buttler can swing away. It hasn't been often that Boult or Southee have missed their length.

OUT! Caught & Bowled. Trent Boult to Chris Woakes. Slower length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled back to bowler, fielded by Boult. Fantastic return catch. Even though Woakes hasn't found his timing the ball is still travelling back at the bowler and Boult had to react quickly. New Zealand have been brilliant in the last two overs.
FOUR! Trent Boult to Chris Woakes. Off cutter bouncer, down leg side on the back foot hooking, well timed in the air under control past deep square leg for 4 runs. Boult tries the slower ball bouncer again and Woakes is up to the task. Waits that tiny bit longer and spoons the ball over square leg to get a much needed boundary.

SIX! Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. Length ball, down leg side moves in front driving, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. That's how you win a game in style. Picked up and launched high into the night sky with Mitchell Santner ending on 45 from 27 after struggling early on.
Ross Taylor was the main run-scorer for the Black Caps with 113 and when he was batting with Tom Latham the win looked comfortably in hand. That all changed when Latham fell and so did a couple of quick Kiwi wickets. England then felt they were favourites, especially when Taylor fell, leaving the lower-order to get the last few runs. Santner had other ideas though as he bludgeoned four maximums to bring his team home with four balls to spare.
A thrilling opening game to begin the series and if the remaining games are anything like this we are in for a cracker.

FOUR! Chris Woakes to Mitchell Santner. Full toss, middle stump backing away driving, inside edge past fine leg for 4 runs. That was pretty much the perfect yorker. Somehow the ball goes through the legs of the batsman and runs away past short fine leg.

APPEAL! Adil Rashid to Tim Southee. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, by Buttler, appeal made for Stumped. Close call for Southee. There was a second movement which looked like the foot was raised as Buttler whipped off the bails but he is safe.
OUT! Stumped. Adil Rashid to Ross Taylor. Leg spinner length ball, off stump down the track driving, missed to wicketkeeper, by Buttler. What a beauty of a delivery. Perfect line to drag Taylor out of the crease and then plenty of turn to pass the bat and Buttler does the rest. Exactly why Eoin Morgan brought back his wicket taking bowler.
