OUT! Caught. Trent Boult to James Anderson. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to backward point, by Nicholls. England are all out for 58. What a performance from Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Boult rightly finishes it off and ends with career best bowling figures of 6-32. Probably not the right shot for a number 11 to play but it's not up to him to score the runs.

The batsmen will be sat in the dressing room thinking what has just happened and it will need something special from their bowlers to get them out of deep trouble. Plenty of tentative shots with nobody wanting to get forward against the swing of Boult and Southee. Kane Williamson will be thrilled with his choice of bowling first after winning the toss. One positive for England is the amount of movement through the air which Anderson and Broad should love when they get the ball in their hand.

FOUR! Tim Southee to Craig Overton. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed in the air under control past deep backward square leg for 4 runs. • 16.6

FOUR! Trent Boult to Craig Overton. Short, down leg side backing away pulling, well timed in the air under control past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. Overton has decided to throw the bat and try and get some quick runs. He cracks the ball through midwicket with plenty of force and anger.

  • 140.6

Moeen Ali to Neil Wagner. Off break length ball, middle stump on the front foot working, inside edge to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Cook.

Just as drinks are taken Kane Williamson calls in his two batsmen. New Zealand declare with a lead of 369 and around one and half days to bowl out England to go 1-0 up in the series. Henry Nicholls walks off unbeaten on 145, which is a career best, and he was superb along with the captain who also reached three figures.

Batting hasn't looked that troublesome today so England have the opportunity to put up a better fight than the first innings. The big thing though will be batting under lights later on when the ball is relatively new.

  • 140.5

Moeen Ali to Henry Nicholls. Off break length ball, outside off stump down the track Slog, in the air under control to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Overton.

  • 139.3

SIX! Joe Root to Neil Wagner. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control over long on for 6 runs. It hasn't taken Wagner long to get into the action. Takes on the short boundary once he spots the tossed up delivery.

  • 139.2

Joe Root to Neil Wagner. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Bairstow.

  • 139.1

OUT! Caught & Bowled. Joe Root to Tim Southee. Off break length ball, down leg side backing away working, leading edge in the air uncontrolled back to bowler, fielded by Root. Easy as you like. Southee looks to work the ball for a single but is through the shot way too soon and lobs up a simple caught and bowled chance.

  • 138.6

FOUR! Moeen Ali to Henry Nicholls. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot reverse sweeping, bottom edge past third man for 4 runs. Smallest of touches off the bat and enough to deflect the ball past the keeper.

  • 138.4

Moeen Ali to Tim Southee. Off break back of a length, outside off stump on the front foot working, to mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Root.

  • 138.3

APPEAL! Moeen Ali to Henry Nicholls. Off break back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to cover for 1 run, fielded by Anderson, by Bairstow, appeal made for Run Out. Quick single and Southee just makes it, but only just. It required a couple of camera angles to make sure and eventually the big screen shows not out.

  • 138.2

Moeen Ali to Tim Southee. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to short extra cover for 1 run, shy attempt by Bairstow.

  • 138.1

  • 137.1

Joe Root to Tim Southee. Off break length ball, down leg side on the front foot working, to leg gully for 1 run, shy attempt by Anderson.

  • 136.6

FOUR! Chris Woakes to Henry Nicholls. Full toss, outside off stump on the front foot cutting, well timed past third man for 4 runs. Real loosener from Woakes and it gets smeared past a diving Moeen Ali. Runs are coming very easily and quickly for New Zealand.

  • 136.5

Chris Woakes to Henry Nicholls. Off cutter short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, hit body to leg gully for no runs, fielded by Bairstow.

  • 136.4

FOUR! Chris Woakes to Henry Nicholls. Length ball, middle stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge in the air uncontrolled past third man for 4 runs. The edges always comes as soon as the slip gets brought out. Would have been a regulation catch for Cook.

  • 136.3

Chris Woakes to Tim Southee. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump backing away dropped, to silly point for 1 run, fielded by Stoneman.

  • 136.2

Chris Woakes to Henry Nicholls. Short, to leg on the back foot pulling, in the air under control to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Overton.

  • 136.1

FOUR! Chris Woakes to Henry Nicholls. Length ball, outside off stump moves in front sweeping, well timed in the air under control past fine leg for 4 runs. T20 style batting. The gap has been left at fine leg so Nicholls takes a step across his stumps and paddles a fine sweep into the vacant space.

  • 126.1
James Anderson c Trent Boult b Todd Astle 1 (5)

OUT! Caught. Todd Astle to James Anderson. Leg spinner half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid off, by Boult. Astle finishes it off for a famous victory for New Zealand. He tossed it up and Jimmy thought he could slap it through cover but was too early on the shot. Easiest of catches for Trent Boult at mid off.

What a Test match this has turned out to be and finished under lights with a tremendous atmosphere. New Zealand started off on fire bowling England out for 58 but two days of rain nearly cost them a victory. Lots of brilliant performances throughout with two centuries while Trent Boult finished with nine wickets, not forgetting Wagner who has steamed in ball after ball with some hostile stuff.

England know where it was lost and after the first innings it would have needed something special for them to get a result out of the game. There is some minor injury concerns in the camp as well as they move to Hagley Oval. They will need a much better showing if they are to tie up this two game series.

Chris Woakes c Henry Nicholls b Neil Wagner 52 (118)

OUT! Caught. Neil Wagner to Chris Woakes. Short, down leg side on the back foot Fended, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to short leg, by Nicholls. There is nothing Woakes could have done against this delivery. It was a ripper from Wagner, right at the armpit, and Woakes was trying to protect himself from damage. Smacks into the splice of the bat and Nicholls takes the simplest of catches. Gutsy stuff from Woakes but unfortunately he can't see his team over the line.
