  • This will be the 47th meeting between New Zealand and South Africa in men's Tests and the Black Caps will be searching for back-to-back wins against the Proteas for the first time in the history of the fixture after logging an innings and 276-run win in the first Test of this series (February 2022).
  • New Zealand are on the cusp of their first ever men's Test series win against South Africa having drawn three and lost 12 series against them prior; a win in this Test would be just the second time that the Black Caps have won multiple games in a Test series against the Proteas (February 1962).
  • New Zealand have won each of their last three men's Tests at Hagley Oval by at least an innings and have lost only one of their 10 previous men's Tests at the venue overall (W8, D1).
  • South Africa have lost 10 of their last 12 men's Tests away from home (W2), with three of those defeats coming by more than an innings; both of their two wins in that period came against the West Indies at Gros Islet.
  • New Zealand have bowled 59% of their deliveries on a length in men's Tests since the beginning of 2021, the lowest rate of any team in that time; their bowling economy of 2.3 runs per over on length balls is the second best of any team in that time (Afghanistan – 1.9).
  • New Zealand have had a catch success rate of 85% and saved 16 runs per game in the field in men's Tests since the beginning of 2021, the best of any team in either category; South Africa's four dropped catches per game in the same period are the most of any team.
  • Devon Conway (New Zealand) has scored 23% of the Black Caps' total runs in men's Tests when he's played since the beginning of 2021, the second-highest proportion of any player for their respective team among those to have played at least five innings (Joe Root – 24%).
  • Marco Jansen (South Africa) has a bowling economy of 3.5 runs per over when bowling on a short length in men's Tests since making his debut in December 2021; only India duo Jasprit Bumrah (2.1) and Mohammed Shami (2.4) have better rates in that period (min. 2 overs bowled).
  • Colin de Grandhomme (New Zealand) has taken 47 Test wickets and is just three shy of his 50th wicket in the format; he had taken three wickets in each of his two Tests against South Africa prior to this series.
  • Aiden Markram (South Africa) has scored 1,917 Test runs and is 83 shy of reaching 2,000 runs in the format; however, he has reached 30 runs only once in his last 10 Test innings.
