Sri Lanka have won their last two men’s Tests against Pakistan; however, they have never managed to win more in succession against them. Pakistan have lost each of their last three men’s Test series, they have never lost more consecutive series in the history of the format. Sri Lanka won their most recent away men’s Test series (2-0 v South Africa in February 2019), the last time they won back-to-back series on the road was in 2014 (against Bangladesh and England). This will be Pakistan’s first men’s Test series on home soil since February-March 2009 (against Sri Lanka); they have lost just two of their last 10 series on home turf coming into this contest (W6, D2). Pakistan have lost each of their last three men’s Tests at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, after going undefeated in their five Tests at the venue prior (W3, D2). Since 15 May 2017, only Joe Root (England – 24) and Virat Kohli (India – 19) have more scores of 50+ in men’s Test cricket than Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne (16). Mohammad Abbas has the best bowling average (20.4) of any player to bowl in more than 10 innings in men’s Test cricket history for Pakistan and the sixth best of any bowler in the format (10+ innings) since he made his debut (21 April 2017 v West Indies). Since 2017, Dilruwan Perera (Sri Lanka) has bowled 4,166 dot balls – only two off spinners have bowled more in men’s Test cricket in that period (Nathan Lyon – 7,186 and Ravichandran Ashwin – 5,086). Shan Masood (Pakistan) has scored the joint-most runs (18, also Ben Stokes) of any player in men’s Test cricket in 2019 off the top edge of the bat, he is one of seven players to hit a six from such a position this year.
