Profile

Usman Khawaja's cricketing journey is a tale of talent, perseverance, and resilience. Born in Islamabad, Pakistan, his family emigrated to New South Wales, Australia, when he was four years old. A trailblazer, Khawaja became the first Australian of Pakistani origin and the first Muslim to play Test cricket for Australia, making his debut during the 2010–11 Ashes series.   He showcased his versatility early on by earning a bachelor's degree in aviation from the University of New South Wales and becoming a qualified commercial and instrument-rated pilot even before obtaining his driving license. Known for his elegant left-handed batting, Khawaja made his mark in domestic cricket, debuting for New South Wales in 2008 and later captaining Queensland. His international career began with modest returns, but he proved his potential with a remarkable 174 against New Zealand in 2015.    Over the years, Khawaja faced challenges, including being dropped from the team and dealing with injuries, but he continually fought back, showcasing his grit with match-saving innings like his century against Pakistan in Dubai in 2018. A mainstay in Australia's batting lineup, he emerged as a key figure during the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run scorer with 1,621 runs and helping Australia to victory. In 2022, after a long hiatus, he returned to Test cricket with twin centuries in the 4th Ashes Test at the SCG and later excelled in Australia’s tour of Pakistan, scoring 496 runs at an average of 165.33 and earning Player of the Series honors.   The 2023 Ashes saw Khawaja silence critics of his record in English conditions, amassing 496 runs, the highest in the series, and playing pivotal roles in Australia retaining the Ashes. His composure stood out during controversies such as the confrontation with MCC members following Jonny Bairstow's runout, where he condemned their disrespectful behaviour while letting his bat do the talking.   Recognized as ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2023, Khawaja’s achievements extend beyond his batting prowess, as he also won the Shane Warne Test Player of the Year and the Community Impact Award for his contributions both on and off the field. His journey from a young immigrant to a central figure in Australian cricket underscores his resilience, adaptability, and ability to break barriers, making him an inspirational figure in the sport.
