Manchester City revived their Champions League hopes by defeating Club Brugge 3-1 in a tense match on Wednesday. This win in their final league-phase game secured a place in the two-legged play-off knockout round for Pep Guardiola's team. Goals from Mateo Kovacic, substitute Savinho, and an own goal by Brugge's Joel Ordonez ensured City's victory.
Brugge surprised the Etihad Stadium crowd just before half-time. Ferran Jutgla outpaced Matheus Nunes and delivered a long cross that Raphael Onyedika converted into a goal. This unexpected lead put pressure on Manchester City as they headed into the break.

Kovacic equalised in the 53rd minute with a skilful dribble through Brugge's defence, finishing with a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. Nine minutes later, City took the lead when Ordonez accidentally deflected Josko Gvardiol's cross into his own net.
Savinho sealed the win in the 77th minute. John Stones delivered an accurate cross-field pass that Savinho controlled with his chest before scoring past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. This goal confirmed City's advancement to the next stage of the competition.
This match marked only the second time under Guardiola that City failed to register a first-half shot on target at home during a Champions League group stage or league phase game. The previous instance was against Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
Despite this challenge, City demonstrated resilience by winning nine of their last ten Champions League home games after conceding first, drawing only once. This season alone, they have won six matches after trailing 1-0, more than any other Premier League team across all competitions.
The Citizens have consistently advanced from the Champions League group stage or league phase for twelve consecutive seasons. Only Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain have matched this achievement since the 2013-14 campaign.
