Jena initially pursued volleyball but switched to javelin due to his short stature and rejection from a sports hostel. Since 2018, he has been employed by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Bhopal.

In June 2023, Jena won a silver medal at the national championships in Bhubaneshwar. On 30 July 2023, he recorded his second-best throw of 84.38m in Diyagama, Sri Lanka.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Jena achieved a personal best throw of 84.77m in the final, finishing fifth. This performance came despite initial visa approval difficulties.
