Paes-Stosur crash out of mixed doubles quarterfinal

By Staff

Melbourne, Jan 25 (UNI) Leander Paes' sojourn in Melbourne came to an end after the Indian, partnering Aussie Samantha Stosur, crashed out of the mixed doubles quarterfinal at the Australian Open here today.

The Indo-Aussie pair was shocked 6-7 (4/7), 1-6 by unseeded Daniel Nestor of Canada and Russian Elena Likhovtseva to mark the last of Indian challenge at the first grand slam of the year.

More than their rivals Leander-Stosur undid themselves as they failed to convert three out of the five break points and created more double faults in a closely contested first set which was decided by a tie-breaker.

However, any hopes of a comeback in the second set were dashed in just 34 minutes as their unheralded rivals walked away with the set and the match to set up a semi-final clash with seventh seeds Kevin Ullyett and Liezel Huber.
