Mykayla Skinner Biography

Skinner's journey has not been without its challenges. In 2012, she sustained a stress fracture in her back. More recently, in late 2020 and early 2021, she missed over a month of training due to pneumonia and COVID-19, which led to a week-long hospitalisation. In 2020, she also dealt with a bone spur on her foot but opted for platelet-rich plasma injections instead of surgery to stay on track for the Tokyo Olympics.

College Career

Skinner attended the University of Utah, where she studied Journalism and Broadcasting. She rediscovered her love for gymnastics during her college years. However, she deferred her senior year to focus on the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Despite the postponement of the Games, she continued her training and eventually decided to turn professional.

Olympic Journey

Skinner was named an alternate for the United States team at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. This experience was emotionally challenging for her. "The whole time I was in Rio, I probably cried every single night," she said. This motivated her to push harder for the 2020 Olympics.

Retirement and Future Plans

After competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Skinner announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics. She plans to complete her academic degree at the University of Utah. "The Olympics this summer [2021] will mark my last gymnastics competition before I officially retire," she stated.

Personal Life

Skinner resides in Salt Lake City with her husband Jonas. She is fluent in English and continues to be an inspiration for many young gymnasts. Her sporting philosophy is clear: "Set the goal, understand the obstacles, create a positive mental picture, clear my mind of self-doubt, embrace the challenge, stay on track, and then show the world I can do it."

Skinner's journey through gymnastics has been marked by both successes and challenges. Her determination and resilience have made her a notable figure in the sport.
