Lee has faced several injuries throughout her career. In 2020, she spent two months recovering from a broken bone in her left foot and another two months dealing with an Achilles tendon injury. Despite these setbacks, she won the uneven bars title at the 2019 US Championships while competing with a partially healed hairline fracture in her tibia.
In March 2019, Lee sustained an ankle injury and had to withdraw from the 2018 Pan American Junior Championships due to another ankle injury. These challenges have not deterred her spirit or performance.
Lee's sister, Evionn, has also competed in artistic gymnastics at a regional level in the United States. Lee looks up to US artistic gymnast Simone Biles as her idol. Her family's support and her admiration for Biles have played significant roles in her journey.
Lee experienced a tough period between 2019 and 2020. Her father, John, became paralysed from the chest down after a fall in August 2019. Despite this, she won gold on uneven bars at the 2019 US Championships and dedicated her victory to him. Additionally, she lost her aunt and uncle to COVID-19 during this time.
"I fought off the negative thoughts and the sadness," Lee said about this period. "Now I feel like I'm maybe tougher because of it. No, not maybe. I am tougher because of it."
Looking ahead, Lee aims to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This goal reflects her dedication and commitment to gymnastics despite the challenges she has faced.
Apart from gymnastics, Lee enjoys camping and fishing. In 2021, she showcased another talent by appearing as a contestant on the ABC show 'Dancing with the Stars' in the United States.
Sunisa Lee's journey is marked by resilience and determination. From early beginnings to overcoming personal struggles and injuries, she continues to inspire many with her dedication to gymnastics and academic pursuits.
