  • New Zealand snapped a 19-game winless run against India in India in men’s Tests with an eight-wicket win in the first game of this series; only once have the Black Caps won consecutive men’s Tests in Asia, a three-game run between October 2004 and October 2008 (all in Bangladesh).
  • India were on a six-game winning run in men’s Tests at home before losing to New Zealand in the first game of this series; only twice have the Men in Blue lost consecutive men’s Tests at home in the 21st century, against England in November-December 2012 and against South Africa in February-March 2000.
  • The second game of this series will be India’s ninth men’s Test match at home in this calendar year, the outright most such games they have played in a calendar year since 2008 (also 9); the Men in Blue have already won six men’s Tests at home in 2024, only in 2016 have they won more such games (7).
  • New Zealand already lead 1-0 in this series, a win in the second game will give the Black Caps their first ever multi-game bilateral men’s Test series win in India; having failed to win any of the prior 12 such series (D2 L10); it will also be their first such series win away from home since beating England 1-0 in June 2021.
  • India’s top order batters (no. 1-3) have averaged 50.7 runs per wicket in men’s Tests in 2024, the outright most by any team this calendar year; New Zealand’s top order is ranked fifth on the list (34.5).
  • India bowlers have logged a strike rate of 37.9 against left-handed batters in men’s Tests in 2024, the best such aggregate of any team this calendar year; only Australia (21.3) and South Africa (21.6) have a better bowling average against left-handed batters than India (23.1) in men’s Tests in 2024.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal (977) is 23 runs away from becoming just the second batter to reach 1,000 runs in men’s Tests in 2024 after Joe Root (1,300 runs); in doing so, Jaiswal will become the first India batter to reach the milestone since Virat Kohli did so in 2018 (1,322 runs).
  • Matt Henry has a bowling strike rate of 33.9 in men’s Tests in 2024, the third highest of any New Zealand bowler in a single calendar year (min. 60 overs bowled) after Shane Bond (29.8 in 2002) and Daryl Tuffey (30.4 in 2002); Henry’s 31 wickets in 2024 are the most by any Black Caps bowler in a single year in men’s Tests since Neil Wagner in 2019 (43 wickets).
  • Ravindra Jadeja (306) needs six wickets to become the outright fifth highest wicket taker for India in men’s Tests, overtaking both Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in the process (311 wickets each); Jadeja has taken five or more wickets in four of the seven Tests matches in which he has bowled in 2024.
  • 33.7% of all deliveries bowled by Will O’Rourke (New Zealand) in men’s Tests in 2024 have been back of a length, the second highest such aggregate of any bowler in this calendar year after Nahid Rana (36.7%) among bowlers to have played in at least three games; O’Rourke has taken 10 wickets with this length in men’s Tests in 2024, with only Gus Atkinson taking more (11).
