IPL 2025: New Retention Rules and Financial Structure

Franchises can retain up to six players, either directly or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card, with a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and two uncapped players. The new salary cap has increased the auction purse to INR 120 crore.

Additional performance pay and match fees have reached INR 146 crore for 2025 and is projected to hit INR 157 crore by 2027. Each player will also receive INR 7.5 lakh per game, marking a first for the league.

Changes in Player Eligibility Stir Conversations

Revised eligibility rules add excitement to this retention window. Now, a capped Indian player can be reclassified as uncapped if they haven't featured in India's national team or held a BCCI contract in the past five years.
