The Indian Premier League (IPL) season 17 is up and running. The IPL 2024 saw the opening match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The fast T20 format of the game garners a lot of big hitting in the tournament. The top players across the world showcase their cricketing skills, and one of them is the six-hitting ability.

The ball often travels beyond the boundary and into the stands. Like previous years, we can expect a six-hitting exhibition across most matches this season as well.

IPL Sixes over the Years

The dynamic of IPL has changed big time in the last 16 editions. In 2008, the inaugural season of the grand competition, 622 sixes were hit across 59 matches, with an average of 10.54 sixes per match.

Although in 2009 it dipped to 8.58 sixes per match, we have seen the ball clearing the fence more than 10 times on average per match in the last ten seasons. In 2022, the sixes count breached four-digit mark with 1062 sixes (14.35 sixes per match). It hiked further last year with 1124 sixes, an enormous average of 15.19 sixes. As 2024 has started, we can only expect more raining sixes across the venues.
