  • If New Zealand avoid defeat in this match it will be their first series win against England since 1999 (D3 L4).
  • In fact, the hosts have only ever managed one series victory at home versus England (1984); the tourists have avoided defeat in 16 of the previous 17 series played out there (W10 D6).
  • This will be the first ever clash in Test cricket between these sides at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, England did secure a big win against the Black Caps earlier in March to tie up victory in the ODI series however.
  • New Zealand have won three of their four Tests at this venue in Christchurch, beating Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh but losing out to Australia.
  • England come into this series on an 12-game winless run on the road in Test cricket, losing 10 of those fixtures (D2); they have never been winless in 13 consecutive away Tests (also lost 12 between 1939 and 1948).
  • In fact, since the start of 2013 England have won just four of 32 away games (D9, L19).
  • Kane Williamson notched up his 18th century in the first Test, the most of any Black Caps player, only once has he registered back to back centuries in consecutive Test innings and never in the same series (242* v Sri Lanka and 132 v England in 2015).
  • Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali have both scored 2,495 Test runs, Moeen's coming from 85 innings at an average of 32.4 and strike rate of 52.4 with Stoke' coming from 71 innings at an average of 35.6 and a strike rate of 62.3.
  • Stuart Broad passed the milestone of 400 Test wickets in the first Test, his next target is 3,000 runs scored with the bat (currently 2,957), only four previous players have reached both those landmarks (Kapil Dev, S Pollock, Warne, Hadlee).
  • Ben Stokes needs five wickets to reach 100 for England in Test cricket. He only has four wickets in 61 overs against NZ however, at an average of 68.5.
